The Gains & Losses report provides a detailed breakdown of realized gains and losses from securities transactions recorded in TradeLog. It can be used for profit and loss analysis, reviewing wash sale adjustments, and verifying transactions included in your Form 8949 for Securities.
The report contains the same transaction data as Form 8949 for Securities but presents the information in a different format, making it easier to review individual trades and analyze gains and losses.
Please note: All tax year reporting will show a DRAFT watermark until you have completed the End Tax Year process on the TradeLog file. Final tax reporting should always be generated after the End Tax Year process has been completed.
⚠️ Important: The Gains & Losses report should NOT be used in place of IRS Form 8949 for Securities, as it does not categorize transactions as required for Form 8949. Use the Form 8949 for Securities report when preparing your tax filing.
Before Running the Report
The Gains & Losses report includes securities transactions recorded in TradeLog. Digital asset transactions identified using the DCY-__ Type/Multiplier designation are reported separately using the Digital Assets Gains & Lossesreport.
As with all TradeLog reports, the Gains & Losses report can be modified by filtering the data in the Grid before running the report.
For example, if you use the Find, Ticker command to isolate trades for a particular security, the report will include only transactions matching that filter.
- If you are generating the report to review tax filing information, click the All Trades button before running the report. This removes any data filtering and ensures that all applicable securities transactions for the selected tax year are included.
- By default, the report includes realized gains and losses for the current tax year. You can change the Start and End dates to report a different period.
Report Options
The default report options are designed to generate a Gains & Losses report containing the same transaction data used for Form 8949 for Securities.
Wash Sales: Adjust for Wash Sales
This option applies wash sale adjustments according to IRS rules. It should remain selected when generating a report intended to match the gains and losses reported on Form 8949 for Securities.
Gains & Losses Start and End Dates
These dates default to January 1 through December 31 of the current tax year.
If you want to generate a report for a smaller period, such as a month or quarter, change the Start and End dates as needed.
Running the Gains & Losses Report
- Select the Account tab for the account you wish to report on. If you are generating the report to review tax filing information, select the All Accounts tab to include transactions from all accounts.
-
From the Reports menu, select Gains & Losses.
-
Adjust the report options as needed, then click Run Rpt.
- The Gains & Losses report will display.
Using the Report
The Gains & Losses report can be useful for reviewing individual securities transactions, analyzing realized gains and losses, and examining wash sale adjustments.
For tax filing purposes, use the Form 8949 for Securities report, which organizes transactions into the categories required by the IRS.
Reporting Digital Assets: If you have digital asset transactions recorded in TradeLog using the DCY-__ Type/Multiplier designation, those transactions are excluded from this report. Use the separate Digital Assets Gains & Losses report to review those transactions or the Form 8949 for Digital Assets report for tax filing.
